THE CREATIVE ECONOMY: ECONOMIC MIRACLE OR ECONOMIC MIRAGE?

Ever since Richard Florida's book, The Rise of the Creative Class (2002), there has been talk about how creativity can help rebuild America's economy and can serve as an engine for growth in post-industrial cities like Philadelphia. Will the creativity of visual and performing artists, architects, and other such professions form the basis for a whole new economy? Can creativity give us the edge, even as China and India continue to take the lead in manufacturing and service industries? This talk addresses these questions and provides a critical analysis of the "creative economy" and its assumptions.

Saturday, May 8th   Benjamin B. Olshin, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Philosophy, History and Philosophy of Science and Technology, and Industrial Design, University of the Arts
